I recently had the pleasure of appearing on a program where I shared my journey and experiences in the care sector, as the founder of Keko Personnel Limited.
My path into care began while I was living in Korea and working in an office. A friend introduced me to the industry, and I started working part-time in care while continuing my full-time office job. At the time, I relied on au pairs for my children, but I began facing challenges with that arrangement. By the year 2000, I decided to leave my office role and dedicate myself fully to care work, as it gave me the flexibility to be more present for my children.
I first worked with adults with learning difficulties, but my journey took a more personal turn when my father developed vascular dementia and later passed away. That experience motivated me to pursue formal qualifications in health and social care, particularly in leadership and management. It also inspired me to establish my own care business, with a strong focus on supporting people living with dementia, having seen first-hand the challenges my family went through.
Starting the business was not without its challenges—I encountered difficulties with regulations and with finding clients—but those experiences shaped the way I work today.
One service I’m particularly passionate about is sitting care. It’s an often undervalued and little-known service, yet so important. Sitting care gives family carers the chance to take a well-deserved break, while their loved ones are supported with safe and compassionate companionship at home. It’s a service that can be used in so many different ways, and I believe it makes a huge difference for both carers and those they look after.
At Keko Personnel, our motto is “caring with a difference”. For me, that means delivering the kind of care you would want for your own family—care that preserves dignity, respects choice, and encourages independence, rather than simply telling people what to do.
